Thompson Congregational Church Board of Deacons

Would you be interested in being a Greeter?

Would you be interested in being a greeter? The Deacons are looking for individuals, couples and families who would like to serve as greeters at Sunday Service. What could be better than to be greeted by a smiling face when you enter the sanctuary on Sunday morning! We'd like to have greeters at the front (Narthex) entrance and the back (Christian Education Wing) entrance. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Blair Cole at 860-377-2788, send email to blaircole@charter.net, or just say hello on Sunday morning and volunteer!

Would you be interested in being a Liturgist?

Would you be interested in being a liturgist? The liturgist participates in the service by reading the Call to Worship, Unison Prayer, the Scripture Reading and Gospel Lesson. The Deacons are looking for individuals, couples and families who would like to serve as litugists (readers) during Sunday Service. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Blair Cole at 860-377-2788, send email to blaircole@charter.net, or just say hello on Sunday morning and volunteer!

Junior Deacons

We are also looking for members of our church youth program who would like to participate in the service as junior Deacons. They would assist the Deacons during the service; helping with the offering, readings and communion.

What is the Role of Deacons in our Church?

bibleThe beginning of the role of deacon can be found in Acts (6:2-4). In early times deacons were men of good standing in the church and their community. Today, of course, the board of deacons is open to both men and women. We still perform the traditional duties of assisting the pastor in the service, and have greatly expanded the role of deacon to include visiting members of our congregation who are ill or home-bound, and cooperating with the pastor in the ministries of the church. An article with much more information on the role of deacon in UCC churches can be found on the UCC web site. Click here to download this pdf document .
